Synchronous Vs Asynchronous Execution in eLearning


All of us are aware of the fact that eLearning and its content has helped people all around the world gain knowledge in the best possible form and make use of it to get various types of degrees and qualifications. With various benefits like it being self-paced, pliable, and providing a wide range of options to choose from, eLearning has become the ultimate solution for people seeking training that can provide them with some Degree, Vocational, and Certificate courses. And the same eLearning concept is not that simple as a whole. It is executed in two different ways: Synchronously and Asynchronously. In this article, we will get to know about how eLearning is executed in the two different ways mentioned above, i.e. Synchronous eLearning and Asynchronous eLearning.

When a learning module is rolled out synchronously, you have to wait for it to finish before moving on to another task. And when something is rolled out asynchronously, you can move on to another task before the first one finishes. That being said, in the context of eLearning and training, this translates into execution of an eLearning based program or course.

What we get to see today when it comes to eLearning, is that it is divided into two categories- Synchronous and Asynchronous. Both of these learning and training strategies have their own sets of pros and cons. Deciding which one is better entirely depends on the technique of the student or learner and his or her ability to grasp all the knowledge that he or she is being provided with.

  • SYNCHRONOUS eLearning:

    Any learning or training technique, theory, or tool that is in real-time, for example, online chat, messaging, and videoconferencing, that allows the students or learners to interact with the teacher or trainer immediately in real-time, is Synchronous. The learners or students who opt for synchronous eLearning have the advantage of asking questions directly to the teacher whenever they have any content related doubt in their minds when the session is going on, and get solutions of them at that very moment itself.

    The major advantage of synchronous eLearning is that it helps in eradicating the propensity of seclusion, because of the simple fact that there is a one-on-one communication established between the trainer and the trainee from the beginning till the end of the learning process.

    But Synchronous eLearning is not flexible when time and schedule are taken into consideration. In order to experience online real-time sessions of Synchronous eLearning, students are needed to set aside a particular time slot, which is neither a solution nor is it ideal for the ones who already have busy timetables and schedules.

  • ASYNCHRONOUS eLearning:

    Asynchronous eLearning and training method is found to be more user friendly and flexible as compared to Synchronous eLearning method. Asynchronous learning can be carried out even when the student or teacher is offline. In this method of eLearning, students finish their lessons and sessions all on their own and use internet as just a mere assistance tool rather than being on it for the entire lesson. In this way, students are saved from getting scheduling conflicts in their minds and are given the luxury to manage the curriculum according to their own pace.

    But Asynchronous eLearning has a disadvantage too. Unlike Synchronous eLearning method, Asynchronous eLearning method might lead to feelings of isolation as there is no one-on-one interaction of the learner with his or her teacher.rning process.

    Therefore, it can be concluded that for an eLearning program or course to become an efficient one, it needs to have both Synchronous as well as Asynchronous eLearning activities. This will be a solution to all the general problems faced and enable the students to access immediate help whenever needed, while still providing the ability to learn at their own pace.
